SUMMARY:Lecture: Aspects of living with space debris
DESCRIPTION:Aspects of living with space debris: current challenges\, trends and achievements \nSpeaker: Tim Flohrer\, Head of the ESA Space Debris Office \nToday’s evolution of the space debris environment raises concerns on the long-term sustainability of using space as a resource. Space debris is a major safety issue for operational spacecraft. It can also become a risk to persons and property on Earth in cases of uncontrolled re-entry events. \nProtecting our infrastructure is the aim of several ESA activities in recognizing the safety aspects of missions and the importance of sustainable utilization of space as an integral part of society. At ESA’s Space Debris Office we provide support to missions in all phases on space debris matters –from the early design considerations to operational collision avoidance to post mission disposal. Our most recent challenge results from the revolutionary transition in the use of orbital regions through large constellations and the acceleration of the number of small satellites in the space traffic. \nIn the lecture we will introduce space debris\, and how we derive a situation picture through observation and modelling the spacedebris environment. We will address aspects of designing and operating spacecraft in compliance with the space debris mitigation measures\, and on how ESA tools can help you in your project. Special attention will be at aspects of larger constellations. We will introduce ESA’s Space Safety Programme\, with special focus on current technology needs addressing space debris\, such as the small missions DRACO (Destructive Re-entry Assessment Container Object)\, VISDOMS (Verification of In-Situ Debris Optical Monitoring from Space)\, and the projects CREAM (Collision Risk Estimation and Automated Mitigation) and laser tracking. We will also talk about core technology activities that are ongoing or planned\, such as addressing risk modelling\, data acquisition\, and environment consequence analyses and capacity management. Finally\, we will show how ESA’s zero debris approach aims to totally stop the generation of debris in valuable orbits by 2030. \n* This event is hosted by the Space Department\, not by Artemis.

SUMMARY:Colloquium: JUICE
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium JUICE \nSpeaker: Olivier Witasse\, Juice project scientist\, ESTEC \nThe Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer mission\, 2 months after its successful launch. The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) spacecraft was launched from Kourou on the 14th of April. After a perfect injection\, the spacecraft is on its way to Jupiter. Eight years and four gravity assist flybys are needed to arrive at destination in July 2031. JUICE will make detailed observations of the giant gas planet and its three large ocean-bearing moons – Ganymede\, Callisto and Europa – with ten powerful instruments.  Are those moons potentially habitable? How has Jupiter’s complex environment shaped its moons\, and vice versa? What can the Jupiter system tell us about other solar systems being discovered elsewhere in our Universe? JUICE was built to answer these fascinating questions. Olivier Witasse\, JUICE project scientist\, will give an overview of the mission\, its scientific objectives\, its numerous challenges\, its complex trajectory\, and provide the latest news two months after launch.

SUMMARY:Colloquium: Early release science observations of the Jovian System as a demonstration of JWST’s capabilities for Solar System science
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium title: Early release science observations of the Jovian System as a demonstration of JWST’s capabilities for Solar System science\n\nSpeakers: Imke de Pater (University of California\, Berkeley & TU Delft)  and Stephanie Cazaux (TU Delft)\n\nEarly Release Science data of the Jovian system (#1373) have been taken in July-August\, and in Nov-Dec. These observations explore the planet’s atmosphere\, its major and minor satellites and faint ring system. We will discuss the scientific rationale for and preliminary results of our observations. \n•      Jupiter has been observed for centuries and has been visited by several spacecraft. What secrets can JWST still reveal?\n•      Ganymede\, the largest satellite in our Solar System\, is composed of a molten core\, a silicate mantle\, and complex crust overlying a liquid water layer. Most intriguing\, it has an intrinsic magnetic field. What can we learn from JWST about Ganymede’s crust and atmosphere?\n•      Io is the most volcanically-active body in our Solar System. What can JWST reveal us about Io’s surface and the way volcanoes may affect its atmosphere?\n•      The fine dust particles of the Jovian ring have a limited lifetime – perhaps years – due to solar radiation pressure and electromagnetic forces\, and hence require a continuous supply of dust. What can JWST tell us about the rings and small moons?

SUMMARY:Colloquium: From the thermodynamic evolution of the protosolar nebula to the current composition of the Jovian system
DESCRIPTION:Title: From the thermodynamic evolution of the protosolar nebula to the current composition of the Jovian system\n\nSpeaker: Prof Olivier Mousis\, Aix-Marseille Université\, France \nRecently\, the microwave radiometer aboard the Juno spacecraft provided a measurement of the water abundance in the equatorial region of Jupiter\, from 0 to 4 degrees of north latitude\, and in the 0.7-30 bar pressure domain. The water abundance in this region of Jupiter was found to range between 1 and 5 times the protosolar abundance of oxygen at 1-sigma\, but could be as low as zero if one considers the two-sigma determination. Here\, we aim to combine this range of possible oxygen abundances with the other known measurements of elemental abundances in Jupiter\, to discuss the mechanisms that could explain i) the observed metallicity of its envelope\, and ii) the monotonic decrease in bulk density of the Galilean moons. We find that a large range of metallicities of Jupiter’s envelope could be explained by the agglomeration of solids condensed in its feeding zone and/or by accretion of gas during its growth. Our study illustrates the importance of measuring the elemental abundances in the giant planets atmospheres\, as they can be used to trace the planetary formation location and/or the chemical and physical conditions that took place during the formation of their moons.

SUMMARY:Colloquium Amirhossein Bagheri -- ETH Zürich\, Switzerland
DESCRIPTION:Using tides to reveal the interior and origin of planetary bodies – Application to Mars-Phobos-Deimos and Pluto-Charon systems. \nAbstract: Studying the present-day interior properties and the mechanisms that govern their evolution can provide insight into their origin and formation processes. With the lack of seismic measurements for the majority of planetary bodies\, geodetic observations such as tidal response can play an important role in understanding their interior properties.Here\, we focus on the Mars-Phobos-Deimos and Pluto-Charon planetary systems\, using tidal and thermal evolution models to study their interior structure and formation history. Robust geodetic measurements for Mars\, including its response to the gravitational attraction of the Sun and Phobos\, as well as its mass and moment of inertia\, have been used to constrain interior models created with thermodynamic calculations and viscoelastic models\, allowing us to obtain seismic wave velocity profiles\, viscoelastic behavior\, and core size and composition. Using the constraints obtained from inversion and a new tidal evolution model\, we studied the orbital evolution of Phobos and Deimos. We found that the commonly used tidal evolution model is inaccurate for highly eccentric orbits and does not take into account dissipation due to libration\, which necessitates considerable modifications to the model. Based on this study\, we propose a new model for the origin of Phobos and Deimos\, suggesting that they were formed by the disruption of a common progenitor due to an impact with an oncoming object. We also used the results obtained from orbital evolution modeling to constrain the interior structure of Phobos and Deimos\, showing how measurements of tidal deformation can help better understand their interior structure. The study also examines the Pluto-Charon binary using a coupled tidal-thermal evolution model\, which reveals that Pluto has maintained a subsurface water ocean due to internal heating\, while Charon has not. The results suggest that the two bodies experienced a period of severe tidal heating after Charon’s formation until reaching a stable 1:1 resonance.

SUMMARY:Colloquium: YSES and WiSPiT: direct imaging surveys for young gas giant exoplanets (registration mandatory)
DESCRIPTION:YSES and WiSPiT: direct imaging surveys for young gas giant exoplanets\n\n\nThe Young Suns Exoplanet Survey (YSES) has found three young (~20 Myr) self luminous gas giants around two solar type stars in Sco-Cen at relatively large (>110 au) projected separations\, and the survey of 72 stars is only 50% complete. Understanding how these exoplanets came to be so far from their parent star is a challenge – is this population of wide separation planets a strong function of their environment\, or their age? \nWe have started the Wide Separation Planets in Time (WiSPiT) survey using the same snapshot technique used in YSES\, and we expect to constrain the exoplanet population in younger stellar associations to see if these wide separation exoplanets are present at earlier times. \nSpeaker: Matthew Kenworthy // Leiden Observatory and TU Delft \nRegistration: Mandatory\, click “RSVP” below. \n\nLunch: Bring your own
